Modern

Updated View of Modern

Modern in the broadest sense refers to designs that have clean, crisp lines, minimal accessories, a simple color palette and a mix of materials. These elements combine to create a sleek, open and uncluttered space. There are several versions of the modern style that are popular:

Contemporary

The Contemporary style is a less rigid version of modern with a mix of elements that are on-trend and can include more curved lines. In addition, the color palette associated with contemporary design tends to be very neutral black, white and tones of grey.  When color is added, it is often pure, saturated tones.

Mid-Century

Mid-Century  is a retro nostalgic version of the modern style that gets its style from Scandinavian and American designs form the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. This design style focuses on functionality that is not fussy and emphasizes pared-down forms in natural or organic shapes.  Featuring an earthy palette of browns and olive greens that are punctuated with teals and orange, it is whimsical and uplifting.

Minimalist

The minimalist style is ultimately defined by a sense of functionality and ultra-clean lines. Anchored in the modern esthetic, the minimalist style seeks to create a peaceful retreat by eliminating unnecessary clutter. It takes notions of modern design and simplifies them further. Color palettes are neutral and airy; furnishings are simple and streamlined, and nothing is excessive or flamboyant in accessories or décor.
